That calculation is wrong because it treats safety incidents as isolated events. They're not. A single high-profile failure (a hallucinated legal citation, a biased recommendation, a data leak) doesn't just cost you the affected users. It resets the trust baseline for your entire user base and, depending on the severity, for your entire product category.

The counterintuitive truth: the growth teams that produce the best multi-year results are the ones most willing to sacrifice quarterly metrics.
Not because they don't care about metrics. They do. They're rigorous about measurement and disciplined about experimentation.
They're also clear about what they won't do. They won't ship a dark pattern that lifts conversion by 2% if it damages the user's perception of fairness. They won't gate a safety feature behind a paywall. They won't over-monetise a new capability before users have learned to trust it.
That restraint costs them on the dashboard. It earns them something that doesn't show up on dashboards at all: the kind of brand trust that makes customers stay when a competitor launches and recommend you without being asked.
